Did You Know?
- In Pakistan water related diseases cause nearly 60 per cent of child mortality cases
- More than 780 million people around the world do not have access to safe drinking water
- 72% of the urban population had access to improved sanitation facilities. In rural areas, the number was just 34%, bringing the country average to 47%
WHY?
Pakistan has an underdeveloped infrastructure and ineffective sanitation facilities. Millions have little or no access to clean water and often the same water that is used for defecation is being used for cooking and drinking purposes. This results in an increase in waterborne illnesses such as typhoid, dysentery and Hepatitis C.In rural areas, there is limited availability of water for great distances and residents have to make long journeys on foot to obtain and collect water. This chore is usually for women and children who spend hours hauling water. If families are provided with pumps, it will enable women to undertake other useful chores and children will be able to attend school.
